Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
